Tunnels: Staffordshire & Worcestershire Canal

Dunsley tunnel (250 yards)

Dunsley tunnel was hewn out of sandstone and opened in 1772. It is not lined and has a towpath running through it. It is very short and it makes you wonder why a tunnel was built - you would think it would have been easier to cut all the rock away for such a short distance.

Much of the canal in this area runs through pretty sandstone cuttings.

Cookley tunnel (65 yards)

This tunnel was opened in 1772 and was hewn through sandstone with a tow path which is unusual but probably because sandstone is soft and therefore easier to create a wider tunnel. Cookley village sits atop the tunnel and you can see houses right above you as you enter making you worry that plant pots may fall from their gardens.
