Tunnels: Shropshire Union Canal

Cowley tunnel (81 yards)

The tunnel was originally planned to be 690 yards long but most of it was opened out during construction due to faults in the rock.  The tunnel was opened in 1831 and is the only tunnel on the Shropshire Union.

The picture on the South portal clearly shows the steep cutting that was left. The tunnel is unlined and has a towpath.
