Pouilly en Auxois tunnel (3,330 metres)
The tunnel is 3.33 kilometres long, was opened in 1832 and took seven years to construct.
These days the tunnel is lit throughout making the journey very easy. It takes about 40 minutes to transit in a small boat like a narrowboat, but up to three hours in a full width, full length (39 x 5 metres) hotel boat.
There is a trip boat that takes fare paying passengers through the tunnel. This boat is based at Pouilly-en-Auxois at the north western end.
Originally boats were legged through then a steam tug was introduced which operated until the late 1800s. This was replaced by an electric tug which operated for nearly 100 years until 1987. The tug can be seen at the north western end.
